How to Buy a New Car Engine

    • 1). Visit the dealership parts department and ask about a new engine for your car. Have the vehicle identification number (VIN) available. The price will surprise you, and not in a pleasant way. Unless the car is fairly new, the engine price--plus installation costs--will exceed the value of the car.

    • 2). Shop engine builders and ask questions. Their answers might surprise you in a pleasant way. Top builders only use the original crankshaft, engine block, head casting and piston rods. They install new valves, new valve guides and springs, pistons, piston rings and gaskets. All new timing components are included, plus valve train lifters, and rockers. The list is extensive, and the engine will come with a warranty. Very little of a top-quality rebuild is not new.

    • 3). Check with salvage yards and inquire about a low-mileage engine. At times salvage vehicles are dismantled with under 100 miles service. It is very routine for large salvage operations to have inventory on hand with fewer than 10,000 miles. An engine with 50,000 miles is routinely available. A very low mileage engine with only a few miles service may meet your requirements.
