How to Get Rid of Trojan Software
- 1). Download and install the anti-virus application of your choice. There are the obvious big names in anti-virus (Norton and McAfee) that require you buy the application and buy a subscription to the updated virus definitions, though there are some great freeware applications that do just as good a job as their corporate counterparts (for example, AVG Anti-Virus).
- 2). Download and install an anti-spyware application. Again there are the heavyweights, but it is increasingly less crucial to pay for the software as there are great freeware options (for example, Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and Spybot - Search & Destroy).
- 3). Open your anti-virus application. Depending on the application, it may automatically download the latest virus definitions. If it does not, there should be an option to check for updates either within the main application window or through the menu bar. Allow the program to update so you have the latest list of threats.
- 4). Select a "Full System Scan" on your C: drive. Some programs offer an option for a deeper or more comprehensive scan; be sure to select this. This offers a sort of "deep tissues massage," working out all the bugs, viruses and trojans hidden deep within your system. Depending on the size of your hard drive, it may take some time for the scan to complete--especially if it's your first time running it.
- 5). Delete or quarantine the detected trojans and other malicious software. Some programs offer an option to heal or fix the infected files; do so if you wish.
- 6). Open the anti-spyware application. Again, select the option to update the software if it does not do so automatically.
- 7). Run a "Full Scan" on your C: drive to detect any spyware or adware.
- 8). Delete or quarantine any detected spyware threats.
