McDonalds facing a law suit from a 15 year old boy claiming his overweight body is their fault. The case is thrown out. Many fast food chains are quivering. A billion dollar business that has stuffed Americans with fat and sugar for 20 years plus might be forced to reform? Books like "Fatland" by Gregory Critser has a very blunt sub title"How Americans became the Fattest People in the World". Other countries are following however USA with 64% overweight leads.
The face of death is no longer a starving African, its an overweight American. We all know that fast food and processed food is a huge problem. How did we get to this point? Let's go back to President Nixon's Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz. His assignment/goal was to find ways to produce cheaper food. High fructose corn syrup makes the scene. Its 6 times sweeter than cane sugar and cheaper. It protects frozen foods from freezer burn and adds shelf life to other foods. Sounds innocent enough so far? Another budget saving item was palm oil. The problem with that is it clogs your arteries big time. During this time period you see Coke and Pepsi switch over from a blend of high fructose corn syrup to 100%. Extra calories for half the price!
Between 1970 and 1994 calorie intake for Americans increases 200 calories per day. Another marketing trick shows up. The combo meal and super size portions. Driven to boost profits only it has been very successfull in getting familys to eat more. A Penn State study found children at the age of 3 will eat what they can and leave the rest. However by age 5 they will finish the meal even if the portion size was increased. So we have "learned" or programmed ourselves that more is better at an earlier age.
People who ate fast food more than 20 times a month spend 66 billion of the 110 billion dollar fast food business. Terms describing this group sound more like an addiction or sub culture. Then the late 80's bring more than 2000 new snack products to market. The more TV we watch the more we are encouraged to snack,munch on burgers and pizza while skipping/avoiding exercise. Because of all these new habits, diets have a hard time succeeding.
