China Lifts Restrictions On Corn Imports From Brazil

In a move thats likely to spread cheer among corn producers in Brazil, China has lifted its restrictions on the grains import from the South American nation. The accord was signed during Brazilian Vice President Michel Temers recent visit to China.

Although China is the second largest producer of corn after the United States, the lack of land and water resources coupled with problems like shortage of skilled young farmers has left the country unable to keep up with the growing demand of its rapidly increasing population.

Until now, the country was meeting its additional needs with corn imports from the U.S. However, disappointing yield in the U.S. over the last several years has forced the Middle Kingdom to explore other options. Before signing the deal with Brazil, it had entered into a similar agreement with Argentina and even received its first shipment of corn from the country in August this year.

Chinas decision to lift the import ban on Brazil came after the latter agreed to address its phytosanitary concerns. The two countries have even signed an agreement stipulating necessary quality and quarantine standards for corn imports into China.

The country is expected to import about 7 million metric tons of corn this season despite assurances from officials that corn imports into China were likely to decline this season on the back of increased domestic output.

One thing is clear. The news could not have come at a better time for Brazilian farmers, whove been struggling with surplus corn crop thanks largely to a tremendous increase in their double corn crop production.
