How to Resurface a Stone Fireplace

    • 1). Mix together 1 ounce of regular table salt and 1 oz. of detergent in a bowl with a metal spoon. Stir the mixture as you slowly add water in a steady stream. Stop adding water when a paste forms.

    • 2). Scoop up some of the mixture on a clean, soft cloth. Rub the paste all over each of the fireplace stones with a cloth. Work from top to bottom and from one side to the other.

    • 3). Wait 15 minutes. Scrub the entire surface of the fireplace with a stiff-bristled brush. Remove all of the paste from the fireplace with a damp cloth.

    • 4). Apply more paste to the stone if there are any remaining stains. Wait another 15 minutes. Scrub the fireplace again, and wipe away all of the paste. Let the stones dry well before lighting a fire.
