The Haunted Royal Palaces in London

Given their rich and eventful history, it's not a surprise that the historic royal palaces are the places where most of the ghost stories are born. On top of all the places in London, the Tower of London can be considered the €home€ of the most famous ghosts. A prison and an execution place, the Tower saw the last days of the people that now fill the history pages. It is a place of murders and mysteries. Besides the tower, all London's palaces have their own ghost stories.

The ghost from the Queen's house

Arbella Stuart was the wife of William Seymour (Lady Jane Grey's nephew). They married without the permission of their king, Arbella's cousin, James I. At that time, this was considered treason because both of them were born in noble families and both had claims to the throne. Records show that soon after the marriage, Arbella was put under house arrest and William was sent to the Tower of London. Arbella escaped and disguised herself into a man so she can release her husband from the Tower. Eventually, William was successfully moved outside the country, but Arbella was caught while she was sailing alone and was imprisoned into the Tower, where she died in the Queen's House, one of the most haunted constructions at the Tower of London.

Now, there are a lot of stories that support the idea that the bedroom where Arbella died is haunted by the noblewoman. Major General Geoffrey Field's wife claims that she felt a violent push in her back while she was making the bed. Also, some other women felt that they were being strangled in their sleep in the same room.

The nurse that haunts Hampton Court

Dame Sybil Penn, known in history as €Grey Lady€ was a famous nurse, who served four Tudor monarchs. She played an important part, being the person that practically raised Prince Edward, and Elisabeth I. The female heir of King Henry VIII had smallpox while living at Hampton Court in 1562. Dame Sybil died soon after from the same disease. The haunting began in 1829 when the Hampton Church was rebuilt and her tomb moved. Soon after that, strange noises were heard through a wall at the palace, sounds described as the noises someone makes while working on a spinning wheel. Another weird coincidence is that after a thorough search, an unknown chamber had been discovered, surprisingly containing an antique spinning wheel.

The queen that haunts Hampton Court

Catherine Howard was the fifth wife of King Henry VIII and Queen of England for only one year. She was the second queen beheaded by the famous monarch, being accused of adultery and treason. When the charges against her were presented before the king, he immediately commanded the confinement to her apartments at Hampton Court. When she heard the sentence of house arrest, she escaped from the guards and ran down the gallery so she can find the king and plead for her life. After she was caught, she was dragged back screaming and fighting. Over the years, that particular gallery from the Hampton Court gained the name of €The Haunted Gallery€, because her screams were heard by those living close to the palace and by the visitors, especially when it's the anniversary of the date when she was put to arrest. Also, the ghost of Catherine Howard is sometimes seen at the Tower of London, in the area where she was waiting to be executed.
