It is called urinary incontinence, defined as the involuntary loss of urine or being incontinent of urine, however I call it wetting my pants.
To me it is the most embarrassing of things.
I lose urine when I cough, when I laugh, when I throw up.
It's a horrible thing to deal with for me.
Some women experience it in a different way in that they feel the need to go really strongly and before they can get to the bathroom, they simply go or some women piddle urine in small amounts all the time.
However the problem affects you, the key is that it does indeed affect you.
Urinary incontinence affects many women, and can keep you from living life to the fullest as the fear of accidentally wetting your pants keeps you from many activities that you would normally do.
If say you have the fear of peeing while having sex, then most likely you won't be having sex.
If you are afraid to go hiking as there are no bathrooms about, you may just stop hiking.
It's a downward spiral that can debilitate your life.
There are many reasons why people will have urinary incontinence, for women the reasons are many and varied so they will be affected twice as much as men.
Some reasons a woman may be incontinent of urine are: women's urinary structure is set up in such a way that it is easy to get the problem, pregnancy, disease, illness and menopause account for most of the increase in chances of getting urinary incontinence.
General problems of brain injuries, strokes, aging and birth defects affect both men and women.
Why does incontinence occur? There are two small things that can go awry and cause incontinence of urine in people and they are the nerves and muscles that are there to help us control our urine stop doing their job.
Urine is the waste product from the kidneys.
It is mostly water and is stored in the bladder and released through the tube called the urethra to be expelled and flushed away.
Your body was formed in such a way that the muscles and nerves work together to release the urine at the proper time.
The muscles in the walls of your bladder tighten and contract forcing the urine into the urethra, while this is happening the muscles in the urethra are given command to release and relax, letting the urine flow to the outside of the body.
If the muscles or nerves are not doing their job then you will have urinary incontinence.
Your muscles may not be strong enough to hold back the urine and you will get leakage.
Another problem is that some bladders may spasm and push urine to the urethra with not enough time for the muscles in the urethra to halt the flow.
If you are overweight the pressure from the weight alone can make the muscles unable to hold in the urine, so weight loss can help stop this problem.
Many things happen in a woman's life that can add to the incidence of urinary incontinence; childbirth, weight gain, injury, heavy lifting frequently in life, and aging can all cause the muscle structure that holds the bladder up to weaken.
Thus if the ligaments holding your bladder up falter then the bladder will shift and drop moving to the vagina.
Unfortunately this move can cause the urethra to not shut as quickly or tightly as it should and urine leaks out.
There are seven types of urinary incontinence:
  1. Stress Incontinence- When you cough, sneeze, lift weights or do any type of exercise you can pee in your pants.
  2. Urge Incontinence - You get the urge but don't get to the bathroom in time or you don't realize the urge and you pee, this can include; urinating while asleep, stick hand in the water and make someone else pee while asleep, or turn on the water to help you pee kind of urge.
  3. Overactive bladder Incontinence- The nerves are irritated and signal your body to urinate quick and with frequency and you just don't get to the bathroom in time.
  4. Functional Incontinence - This happens with people that are unable to get to the bathroom because their thinking is unclear, or their physical ability is unable to get them there.
Diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's and physical limitations such as wheel chairs or broken bones are the culprits in functional incontinence.
  5. Overflow Incontinence - Your bladder is too full and gets rid of small amounts of urine frequently
  6. Mixed Incontinence - This is normally a combination of urge and stress incontinence
  7. Transient Incontinence - This is the piddling of urine only when you have a new problem such as taking new medicine, dieting, having an illness with a cough and urinary tract infections.
