How to Become a Correctional Officer in Riverside County, CA

    • 1). Meet the minimum requirements. Graduate from high school with a certificate of proficiency issued by the California State Board of Education. Pass a GED test if you have not graduated from high school. Possess a valid California driver’s license. You must be at least 18 years old.

    • 2). Complete an online questionnaire. Create a “User Profile” on the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department website. Click the “Apply Now” button. This takes you to the “Career Search” page. Click “Apply for this job” button at the bottom of the page. Create a “User Profile” and complete the questionnaire. The questionnaire is a series of questions that determines your suitability for the position of Correctional Deputy.

    • 3). Pass an entrance exam. Once you have created a user profile select an exam date and time. Take the exam in person. Arrive at the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department with a valid government issued ID such as a California driver’s license. After passing the exam you will undergo an interview immediately following the exam.

    • 4). Pass additional examinations. Pass an agility test, undergo a background investigation, pass a polygraph exam, take a psychological exam and undergo a medical exam. Once you pass all the exams you will be enrolled in the next available training academy.

    • 5). Graduate from the training academy. The Basic Correctional Deputy Academy is a 373-hour training course. Complete the training course. Begin your career as a Correctional Deputy. After graduation you will be assigned to a correctional facility located in Riverside County.
