Rugs warm hardwood and tile floors and add color to your decor. Whether you spend a lot of money on your rugs or purchase them at bargain prices, keep them looking great with regular cleaning. Stains that set into your rug can damage the fibers, but many of the commercial rug cleaners use dangerous chemicals. Natural alternatives are better for the earth and pose little risk to your family's health.

    Water and Vinegar

    • Create a solution of two common household items for light stains like dirt or light-colored juices. Mix 1 part water and 1 part white vinegar in a squirt bottle. Spray the mixture directly on the stain all allow it to set for a few minutes. Use a nylon brush to gently brush away the stain. Wipe the area with a damp towel to remove the rest of the cleanser and then dry the area with an absorbent towel or cloth.

    Vinegar, Borax and Salt

    • Tough stains like pet urine or vomit call for a more powerful cleanser. Borax, salt and white vinegar create a solution that is effective at removing these types of spots. Mix equal portions of all three ingredients and stir until a paste forms. Spread the paste over the stain and gently work it into the rug fibers. Allow the paste to dry and then vacuum the rug. Clean any remaining paste with a damp cloth and then blot the area until it is dry.

    Baking Soda

    • Greasy stains, such as tomato sauce or salad dressing, are the most challenging to remove. Blot the area with a dry paper towel to remove any residue that is sitting on top of the rug. Cover the stained area with baking soda, which will help absorb the grease. Allow the baking soda to sit on the rug for several hours before you vacuum it. If the stain is still visible, clean the area with a mixture of vinegar, borax and salt.

    Retail Brands

    • Most stores sell commercial carpet and rug cleansers that use natural ingredients, including water, plant-based compounds and citrus oils. When purchasing these products, always read the label to make sure it is biodegradable and safe to use around children or pets.
