How to Charge Static Electricity
- 1). Blow up a latex balloon and seal it with a knot. Rub the balloon on your (or your friend's) hair. This motion will remove electrons from the hair, giving the balloon a negative charge -- and thus creating static electricity. Place the balloon on a wall and watch the electrical force hold it in place.
- 2). Find a wool hat and rub it on your hair. This action will take away some electrons from your locks and give each strand its own slightly positive charge. Because like charges repel each other, your hair will stand on-end as each strand tries to move away from the others.
- 3). Drag your feet across a carpet to charge yourself with extra electrons. Walk across the room and put your finger on a door knob. You'll feel a zap, which is a small electrical shock, as the electrons move from the door knob to you.
- 4). Charge static electricity in a plastic comb by blowing it with a hot hair dryer for a few seconds or by rubbing it on a sweater. See this static charge in action by turning on a faucet so that water runs in a stream about an 1/8-inch thick. Slowly place the comb near the water. The water, which is neutral, will be pulled toward the charged comb and create a bend in its flow.
