Public speaking is an important skill that everyone needs to develop.
It is not just for lawyers, politicians or professional speakers.
It is required in every aspect of life, from simply asking directions to bystanders or giving a short speech at a wedding.
The fear associated with public speaking in North America is now rated as number one.
The gripping fear that most people have when asked to give a speech is on par with the severe anxiety felt during a panic attack.
The heart is pounding or racing.
The person feels abdominal distress, often dizziness, sweating, shaking, choking feeling, hot flushes and the list goes on.
The fear of public speaking is associated with worrying about what other people will think of you.
When I've asked clients what are they afraid will happen.
The common response I receive is that they are afraid they will turn red, stutter, say something stupid.
When I ask them what would happen if they did one of these things.
Their response is simply that people will laugh at them or they will make a fool of themselves.
The truth is that the audience would not feel like laughing anymore then the speaker would.
In fact, the audience would feel bad for the speaker.
The audience actually wants the speaker to do good.
They are rooting for the speaker just like a favourite sports team, The audience wants the speaker to be a success.
Success breeds success.
It is important to always focus on the positives after every speech you give whether small or large.
Try to diminish the critical inner voice.
Focus on your strengths.
Strong oral communication skills is required in every aspect of life.
Social phobias are often rooted in the fear of public speaking.
Many clients who are not able to speak effectively in social settings have the same dysfunction in their jobs.
Avoidance of people and situations, self-blame, with less likelihood of problem-solving view or approach is a common characteristic among people suffering from a fear of public speaking.
If the fear of public speaking provokes anxiety to the extent that you begin to avoid the situation, it hinders your ability and can become chronic.
Fortunately, overcoming this fear is one of the most treatable of many anxiety problems.
Through practicing relaxation techniques, affirmations, visualizations and learning the skills and strategies of fearless professional speakers, the fears of public speaking become eradicated.
Self-confidence is boosted with each success.
Public speaking soon becomes an enjoyable, empowering and rewarding life long skill.
