How to Restore a MSSQL Database From a Backup

    • 1). Connect to the MSSQL database with the System Administrator (SA) account or an account with the same or higher rights assignment.This way you do not run into a problem with a lack of rights to perform the restore.

    • 2). Expand the group labeled "Databases" and you will see each database that is available on the SQL server. Right-click the database you wish to perform a restore on and highlight "Tasks." In the next sub-menu, highlight the "Restore" option and select "Database."

    • 3). When the Restore Database window pops up, select or type the database you want to restore in the first drop-down box. Click the button on the next option to specify the date and time to which you wish to restore the database.

    • 4). In the next section, select the option to restore from a device and click on the button at the end of the text box to specify the location of the backup file. The Specify Backup window will open and will be defaulted to "File." Click on "Add," navigate to the location and click "OK." Click "OK" in the Specify Backup window to close this window and add the backup to the Restore Database window.

    • 5). Place a check mark in the box next to the file in the section labeled "Select the backup sets to restore."

    • 6). Click on the "Options" selection on the left-hand side of the window. Click the box labeled "Overwrite the existing database." Select the option under recovery state "Leave the database ready to use by rolling back uncommitted transactions. Additional transaction logs cannot be restored. (RESTORE WITH RECOVERY)." Click on "OK" at the bottom of the window to start the restore process. The progress will be displayed in the lower left-hand corner of the Restore Database window.
