There is no better way to fill your home with holiday cheer than with bright and festive Christmas decorations. No matter what your budget is or what you have to work with, a little creativity can go a long way in making your home warm and inviting. Holiday decorating with a theme can tie your look together and give your home the atmosphere you want. - Hang snowflakes from the ceiling by thread. You can use snowflake ornaments or make your own paper snowflakes. Paper chains made of plain white typing paper make a beautiful garland for decking the halls, walls and banisters. Throw in some strings of clear glass or plastic beads. Use some silver in your decor, such as tinsel on your tree or metallic party curtains. Spray bare branches with white or silver paint and gather into large vases for a pretty display. Use spray-on snow liberally. Spray your wreaths, your tree and your windows with snowflake and icicle stencils. Use white fabric to cover your table, as a tree skirt or hang in your windows. Use white or pale blue light strings.
- Look to nature for your resources. Collect pine cones, acorns and branches to hang on your tree. You can spray paint them to add some splashes of color to your decor. Tie red raffia around scented candles in mason jars. Decorate the mantel with a collection of vintage teddy bears wearing ski caps and scarves. Make gingerbread cookie ornaments for the tree, which look adorable, infuse your home with a delicious scent and can be eaten as treats. Use a thrift shop old-fashioned snow sled on the buffet table as a tray to hold food. If you can sew a basic stitch, pick up some Christmas theme fabric and throw pillow covers, table runners a tree skirt by piecing material bits together in a patchwork style.
- Stray from the bright colors and opt for mauve, sage green, robin's egg blue and antique whites. Use lace liberally, as table coverings, curtains and glue lace doilies on wrapped presents. Make a tree garland by stringing dried rose buds and cinnamon sticks. Combine with gold braided rope and clip-on electric candles and your tree will capture that Victorian elegance. Evergreen boughs combined with fruits and imitation birds make pretty wreaths, centerpieces and mantle decorations. Oil lamps or hurricane lamps help add mood lighting.
- People who live in tropical or sub-tropical climates, or who have always dreamed of having a white sand Christmas on a lush island, can capture this look with bold colors and tropical motifs mixed with traditional Christmas decor. Use a luau palm tree decoration for a Christmas tree and drape it with lights and ornaments. Alternately, take your traditional Christmas tree and decorate it with chili pepper string lights, bright silk tropical flowers, bamboo drink umbrellas and clip-on colorful birds. Display images and figurines of Santa vacationing on beaches in red swim trunks with shades, or riding a bike in a Hawaiian shirt. Hang green grass skirts mixed with strings of luau electric lights as garland from banisters or along curtain rods. Glue leis to grapevine wreath forms to create lei wreath wall hangings. Make a table centerpiece by putting a life-sized wax pineapple on top of a palm frond, and hot glue some silk red poinsettias to its crown. Use swim trunks (sew across the legs openings) or beach bags in lieu of stockings.
