Materials

• Using sturdy fabric, such as felt, will result in a superhero costume that will hold up as it is played with. An added bonus of using felt is that it doesn't have to be hemmed to prevent fraying and can be used to make both a cape and a mask. You will also need contrasting fabric to make the superhero logo on the back of the cape. Ribbon or string holds the mask on your child's face. If you have a sewing machine, it will only take minutes to put together the costume, otherwise you will need a needle and thread for assembling it.
  
  

Where to Buy

• A fabric or craft store is likely to have all the supplies you need. They often sell felt and ribbon by the yard, which allows you to buy only what you need. You can also buy coordinating thread, needles and scissors, if needed. If you are a regular sewer, look through your fabric scraps because you may have enough supplies without having to go to the store.
  
  

Sewing

• Measure your child's neck, face, waist and height so that you know how large to make the costume. Use a pattern to cut out the cape, strings for tying it on and the mask; you can purchase one or make your own. If you are using felt, simply sew the ties to the neck of the cape so you can attach it around your child's neck. Attach ribbon to the mask so it can be tied in the back and cut out large eye holes so your child is able to see while wearing it. Using another pattern, cut out the superhero logo you are using and stitch it to the back of the cape.
  
  

Alternative Ideas

• A cloth superhero costume is likely to hold up well when compared to others. However, you can use opened paper bags and crayons to make a cape and mask, an idea that allows your child to contribute to creating the costume. Paper plates, with eye holes removed, also make good masks that can be colored as desired. Turn your own large T-shirts inside out and cut out a mask and cape and decorate with fabric paints.
