How to Become a Phys Ed High School Teacher
- 1). Obtain a four-year degree in a field related to physical education. Examples of subjects include kinesiology, anatomy and physiology. Take courses in the specific subject you wish to teach. For instance, many high schools offer physical education courses in racquetball, golf, football, softball and weightlifting. Learn the specifics of these athletic activities by enrolling in classes beforehand.
- 2). Acquire teaching credentials. Review the necessary steps as outlined by the state requirements. Consider pursuing a university-approved internship with a high school physical education department as a way of gaining teaching practice. Verify if the state has the option of obtaining a physical education certificate as well.
- 3). Review available positions and apply for the physical education teaching position that best matches your skill set. Expect to submit to a background check, drug test and an FBI check.
- 4). Undergo a job interview for the position with a staff member from the high school. Practice interview questions ahead of time. Expect the staff member to ask about your availability to serve as a coach of a school's athletic program as well.
