How to Recycle Your Milk Containers

    • 1). Collect your milk jugs or cartons in a container along with any other paper or plastic. Look for the recycling symbol of three arrows arranged in a triangle shape on the carton or jugs. Not all material can be recycled, including the caps on milk jugs.

    • 2). Check with your local government and see if there is an option to enroll in a recycling pickup program. Recyclable material is often left outside at the same time as garbage pickup. If recycling is already mandatory, make sure you are adding your milk jugs or you could face fines.

    • 3). Take your milk containers to a central recycling drop-off point. Most areas that do not have home pickup do have bins available for depositing recyclable items. Put your containers in the appropriate bin for either paper or plastic products. You can find recycling centers in your area by searching Earth 911 online.

    • 4). Re-purpose your milk jugs. Cut the bottom out and use the top to protect tender plants from frost. The top also can be used as a funnel. Cut the top off the jug and use the bottom part as a planter, a water bowl for a pet while on a trip or turn it into a luminary. All you need is a little imagination to keep milk jugs useful and away from the landfills.
