Savoy Theatre to Host Performances of Let It Be
The Savoy Theatre, like most of the theatres in London has many interesting facts associated with it. The structure is built at the site where the Savoy Palace stood once. The theatre was initially named the Savoy Opera as it began hosting comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan. It was the first theatre in London to be lit completely by electricity. In 1889, Richard D'Oyly Carte built the Savoy Hotel adjacent to the theatre. The theatre was home to D'Oyly Carte Opera Company for long and in 1929 it was rebuilt by Richard's son Rupert D'Oyly Carte. A grade II listed theatre, Savoy Theatre London can accommodate 1150 audiences in its all three levels.
Richard D'Oyly Carte got the Savoy Theatre by Charles J. Phipps and it opened on 10th October 1881. A West End Theatre, it is located in the Strand, in the City of Westminster London. The theatre has hosted premieres of many notable Gilbert and Sullivan operas like The Mikado. Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit's acclaimed premiere was also hosted here in 1941. In the current years, the theatre has entertained audiences with notable opera shows, Shakespeare, non-musical shows and musicals that include revivals of Fiddler on the Roof and Carousel and fresh ones like Never Forget. Performances of original London production of Legally Blonde were performed here from December 2009 to April 2012.
Carte had initially hired services of Walter Emden who had Garrick and Duke of York's Theatres to his credit. But Carte dismissed Emden when he raised the estimated cost of his services from 12,000 to 18,000. Phipps, the man behind many notable theatres of London was later hired for building the Savoy Theatre. Builders of the house were Patman and Fotheringham and Carte's initial plans were to name the house as Beaufort Theatre, which was changed at the last moment and it was given its current name.
