What Is Silkscreen Printing?
- Silkscreen printing evolved in Japan as a method of stenciling on fabric. The name derives from the fact that, originally, real silk was used as the mesh. By the early 20th century, commercial printing companies had adopted the method, and later still silkscreens became a fine art form.
- Parts of the screen are blocked with a filler, while other parts are left open for ink to be forced through. Each color is applied to its own separate screen, with silkscreen prints often having 40 or more colors.
- This printing technique is a versatile method of applying graphics to many different surfaces, including metals, woods, glass, plastics and ceramics. Some high-quality wallpapers feature hand-crafted silkscreen designs.
