How to Paint Melamine Cupboard Doors
- 1). Protect surfaces that will not be painted. You can use drop clothes or newspaper. Tape the drop clothes around the walls, on the countertops and the floors to protect these areas.
- 2). Take down the cabinet doors. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws from the hinges. Also remove any fixtures such as knobs or door pulls. Place all the removed hardware in a plastic bag and set it aside. The plastic bag will help keep the materials together.
- 3). Prepare the surfaces to be painted. Clean all surfaces. Any surface that will be painted needs to be cleaned. Use a commercial degreasing cleaner to clean them with a sponge. Rinse the surfaces and allow them to dry completely before proceeding. Use an 80- to 100-grit sandpaper to sand all surfaces that will be painted. To remove any built up sawdust, use a tack cloth to wipe all surfaces.
- 4). Prime the surfaces. Use a primer made for melamine and paint all the surfaces with one coat. Allow the primer to dry.
- 5). Paint the surfaces using paint specially intended for melamine. You can choose a flat or glossy coat, whichever you prefer. Use a paintbrush or a roller, depending on your preference. Apply thin, even coats. If necessary, allow one coat to dry and apply a second for more thorough coverage.
- 6). Reinstall all the draw pulls and knobs to the cabinets once the paint is dry. Reattach your cabinet doors using the screws and hinges.
