Paint Recommendation for Countertops
- Several companies have come out with specialty countertop paints. These paints are heavy duty and hard wearing, and are formulated to stick to laminate and other nonporous surfaces. Countertop paint comes in solid colors as well as faux-finishing kits that mimic the look of granite. Some require a clear topcoat, usually included in the kit, and some do not.
- Another option is to use a high-quality bonding primer on the countertops before painting them with an oil-based paint of your choice. You can faux-finish, stencil or decorate the countertops any way you'd like after using the bonding primer. Finish with several coats of clear polyurethane for floors. Floor polyurethane is more durable than regular polyurethane.
- Regardless of which paint product you choose, preparing your countertops by cleaning and degreasing is the key to a lasting paint finish. For better paint adhesion, lightly sand the counters before painting. Once your paint finish is dry and cured, use cutting boards and potholders to avoid damaging the new surface.
