How to Load a Dell OS on Another Laptop With a New Hard Drive

    Deactivating the Old Laptop

    • 1). Insert the Windows installation CD or DVD into the old laptop.

    • 2). Turn the computer off.

    • 3). Turn the computer back on.

    • 4). Press the spacebar on your keyboard when the message "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD" appears on your screen.

    • 5). Click Next on the initial "Install Windows" screen.

    • 6). Click the "Install Now" button.

    • 7). Click Next on product key window; you do not need to enter your product key.

    • 8). Check the box on the license agreement page, and click "Next."

    • 9). Choose the "Custom (advanced)" option when asked which type of installation you want to complete.

      Click the "Advanced" button when asked where you want to install Windows.

      Highlight the main hard drive and click the "format" button.

      Choose the "NTFS (quick)" option.

      Wait several minutes while the hard drive is formatted and erased.

      Remove the Windows installation CD or DVD from your laptop.

    Installing Windows on Your New Laptop

    • 1). Insert the Windows Installation CD or DVD into the new laptop.

    • 2). Reboot the laptop.

    • 3). Press the spacebar when "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD" appears on your screen.

    • 4). Click Next on the "Install Windows" page.

    • 5). Click the "Install Now" button.

    • 6). Enter the Windows product key that came with your old laptop when prompted to do so and click Next. Be sure to check the box next to "Automatically activate Windows when I'm online."

    • 7). Check the box indicating that you accept the Windows license agreement, and click "Next."

    • 8). Choose the "Custom (advanced)" option when asked which type of installation you want to complete.

    • 9). Highlight the hard drive on which you want to install the Operating System.

      Choose the "NTFS (quick)" option if prompted to format the drive. This may not be necessary if the drive is already formatted.

      Wait while Windows is installed on your new laptop. The process can take an hour or longer depending on the speed of your computer.

      Connect to the Internet once the Windows installation is finished to complete the Windows activation.
