How to Paint Abstract Trees

    • 1). Place a large sheet of paper or canvas onto a flat work surface. Fill a small bowl with water and place it next to it.

    • 2). Squeeze various paint colors of your choice onto a separate sheet of paper. This will be your palette.

    • 3). Dip a small paint brush into the water and then into a light colored paint. Wipe the brush with a paper towel to leave only a light coating of paint and water.

    • 4). Paint the basic outline of a tree with this brush. This is called dry brushing.

    • 5). Take a new brush and dip it into a new color. Try a color that is not typically found on trees, like blue or bright orange. Apply loose, quick strokes of paint to the canvas. Paint the basic shape of the tree but don't focus on being exact or achieving a neat look.

    • 6). Apply a new color to the brush for the branches. Paint the top of the tree as you feel it could be, and not as it should be based on a photo or reality. Try closing your eyes while painting, as it will help you to focus on thoughts and feeling rather than logic.

    • 7). Continue to apply new colors and shapes as you see fit, until you have achieved your desired abstract look. Feel free to experiment with different brushes as the painting doesn't have to be uniform.
