How to Update Flatware

    • 1). Determine how many people you want flatware for. Most sets come with four of every utensil. It is always best to have more flatware than not enough. If you have a family of four, consider buying two sets of four.

    • 2). Avoid flatware with complicated designs and patterns. This flatware may be in style now, but in a few years, it most likely won't be. Clean, design-free flatware is best if you want it to last for a long time.

    • 3). Decide what kind of an event you want the flatware for. If it's everyday meals, go with stainless steel. If it's for special events, you want polished silver.

    • 4). Buy flatware sets that have two sets of forks and two sets of spoons. The additional fork is for salads, while the larger spoon is for soups. There is really no need for sets that have five different forks and eight knives. You are likely never going to serve a meal of five or six different courses.

    • 5). Avoid plastic flatware. Not only is this going to damage easier than silver/steel, but it may also melt in the dishwasher. Plastic looks rather cheap when you have guests over.
