Craft activities are an engaging way to teach children a variety of skills. Crafts help develop the small muscles in children's hands. They also allow for children to express their individuality through artistic expression. If you are aiming to teach a specific topic, crafts are a fun way to foster a greater understanding of that topic. If you celebrate Chanukah or are aiming to teach children about the holiday, there are numerous crafts they can create.

    Jar Menorah

    • Create an attractive and functional menorah out of baby food jars. Fully clean eight small baby food jars and one large baby food jar. Have children decorate each jar with jeweled stickers or paint. Once the jars have been decorated, place a ball of modeling clay in the bottom of each jar, which will be used to hold candles. Place a candle in each jar and perhaps a larger candle in the larger jar. Once complete, organize the jars so that the large jar is in the center to represent the "Shamash," and four smaller jars are placed along either side of the large jar. The Shamash, or service candle, is the one used to light all the other candles.

    Star of David

    • Have children create a Star of David out of craft sticks. You will need six craft or Popsicle sticks for each project. Fashion two triangles out of three craft sticks and secure with glue. Once the triangles are dry, turn one upside down and place it on top of the other one, which remains right side up so that the triangles form the shape of a star. Use glue to secure them in place. Using blue paint, have the children paint the star. Once painted, allow them to sprinkle glitter, sequins or craft jewels on the star. Tie a piece of ribbon at the top of the star so that it can be used as a decoration.

    Milk Carton Dreidel

    • Create dreidels out of small lunch-sized milk cartons. Thoroughly clean out each milk carton and cut a slit in the bottom of it, right at the center. Seal the top of the cartons with tape or glue. Have the children paint the cartons blue--two coats of paint may be necessary. Also, have each child paint a craft stick blue. Using a silver glitter pen, help children create the Hebrew letters that are traditionally found on the sides of a dreidel. To complete this project, insert the painted craft sticks into the slit that you previously created in the milk carton. The bottom of the stick will be the point of the dreidel.
