    What is TiVo?

    • TiVo was first introduced to the U.S. in 1999. It was one of the first digital video recorders (DVR) available on the market for consumers. TiVo allows consumers to schedule and record their favorite shows, look at photos and listen to music.

    Development and History

    • Originally named Teleworld, TiVo was created by Jim Barton and Mike Ramsay in 1998. At first, TiVo was intended to be a home network device.

    Products

    • There are currently three TiVo DVRs available to consumers: the TiVo HD (offers 20 hours of HD programming at one time), the TiVo HD XL (7 times more recording space than the TiVo HD) and the TiVo Series2 (records 80 hours of standard definition programming).

    Features

    • With TiVo, you can record a show while watching another show, you can skip over commercials you don't wish to see, you can pause and rewind live TV and you can search up and record shows by keyword.

    Controversy

    • TiVo had plans to add banner ads (similar to the ones we see now that ask if you're interested in recording a suggested show) to commercials when people fast forward through them to market TiVo products and services.
