Sherlock Holmes - The Iconic Character Returns to the Big Screen in Guy Ritchie"s New Film
It seems that Robert Downey Jr.
can do no wrong in this post Iron Man world that we all now live in.
Since cleaning up his image and putting his troubled past behind him, the immensely talented actor has found himself among the cream of the crop of Hollywood A-listers, thanks largely in part to 2008's smash hit Iron Man, which proved Downey's bankability as well as his charmingly charismatic appeal to the masses.
Of course, I've found the actor charming and appealing ever since he donned a bra on his head in the 80s classic Weird Science, but that's just me.
In his new film, Robert Downey Jr.
finds himself portraying one of American literature's most famed fictional heroes; the brilliantly clever, pipe-smoking detective Sherlock Holmes.
Warner Brothers has brought the iconic hero and his adventures back to the big screen for their new film, aptly titled Sherlock Holmes, which opened everywhere during the Christmas weekend and looks to give the timeless character something of a makeover in the eyes of American moviegoers.
Along with Mr.
Robert Downey Jr.
, Sherlock Holmes also stars Jude Law (Road to Perdition, Closer) in the role of the world's most popular sidekick next to Robin, John Watson, Holmes' well-known partner in crime fighting.
Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) also stars in the film, as does Mark Strong (RocknRolla) who plays the villainous Lord Blackwood, the story's central antagonist.
The film's plot revolves around Sherlock Holmes and John Watson on the verge of capturing Lord Blackwood, a notorious serial killer wreaking havoc on London.
After successfully putting a stop to Blackwood and seeing him hanged for his crimes, Holmes and Watson consider the case officially closed.
But when Blackwood makes his return from beyond the grave to continue his reign of terror, Sherlock Holmes realizes it's going to take a lot more of that witty logic that made him so popular in order to get to the bottom of this case.
The crime-fighting duo soon finds themselves immersed in a dangerous world of murder and black magic.
The man responsible for this reimagining of Sherlock Holmes is film director Guy Ritchie, a filmmaker who seems to become more efficient and talented with each movie he directs.
The man made a name for himself in Hollywood with his brilliant low budget comedic takes on disorganized crime rings with films like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch and RocknRolla.
With this script written by Michael Robert Johnson, Anthony Peckham and Simon Kinberg, Guy Ritchie attempts to give the Holmes character a more edgier personality; a man who can solve a case with both his brain and his brawn.
As Ritchie puts it himself, "We've tried to take him back to what we believe to be his origin, which is essentially a more visceral character.
We've tried to integrate that and make him more streetwise.
" So naturally, Guy Ritchie turned to one of the hottest action heroes working today to give life to his new take on Sherlock Holmes and hired Robert Down Jr.
for the role.
And what does Robert Downey Jr.
think of this new take on the famous detective? As he puts it himself, "He was probably the first superhero, an intellectual superhero.
The more you look into Arthur Conan Doyle's books, the more you see what a rich character Sherlock Holmes is.
He's very adept at so many things: he plays violin, he's a martial artist, a boxer, an expert single stick fighter and a swordsman of sorts.
He has a strong moral code in helping good guys catch bad guys, so he has dedicated his life to being a consulting detective.
He doesn't do it to show everyone how smart he is, or that he has figured everything else out when they haven't; he's actually a crusader.
" Like Robert Downey Jr.
, many people all over the world will speak fondly of Sherlock Holmes if asked and enjoy reading of his and Watson's entertaining yet thought provoking adventures.
With the mass appeal surrounding the character as well as the rising popularity of the film's star, to say Sherlock Holmes will be a successful movie isn't just a good guess, it's elementary, my dear reader.
