How to Plant Natural Plants in an Aquarium
- 1). Choose plants suited to your tank size and water conditions. Some species of aquatic plants grow quite large and could outgrow a smaller tank. Some plants do best in unheated cold water tanks, while others will only thrive in a heated tropical tank. The staff at your pet store can help you choose suitable plants.
- 2). Place a thin layer of fertilizer on the bottom of your aquarium. Use a fertilizer specifically designed for aquariums, available at your local pet store or aquarium center.
- 3). Lay down a layer of fine gravel on top of the fertilizer. Use 1 to 2 nches of fine gravel on top of the fertilizer.
- 4). Place the roots of the plants so they extend through the gravel and into the fertilizer below. Make sure the plants are firmly rooted, especially if you have fish that like to dig in the gravel
- 5). Check the plants often to make sure they remain rooted. Reset any plants that come loose from the gravel.
