Removing Latex Paint From Varnished Doors
- 1). Remove the door from the door hinges by removing the hinge screws with a screwdriver.
- 2). Lay the door on a raised work surface with the painted side facing up.
- 3). Sand the surface of the door with 150-grit sandpaper attached to a pad sander.
- 4). Wipe away the sanding dust with a tack rag.
- 5). Remove the paint from any uneven surfaces with paint stripper. Paint stripper is a liquid product applied directly to the paint with a paintbrush. Although the stripper is extremely effective at removing paint, it will not damage the underlying wood. The paint will start to bubble as stripper pulls the paint off the door. Wipe the majority of the stripper and paint residue off the door with a steel wool pad.
- 6). Wipe the stripped areas down with denatured alcohol to remove any remaining stripper and paint residue.
