Qualifications

• According to the BLS, an AMR technician typically needs only a high school education. Because the job involves a significant amount of driving, however, an AMR technician must possess a valid driver's license.
  
  

Responsibilities

• AMR technicians read utilities meters and record power usage to facilitate utilities providers' billing processes. AMR technicians also check meters and connections for malfunctions or damage and provide relevant information to repair workers.
  
  

Salary

• As of 2009, the average hourly wage for an AMR technician was $17.50, or $36,400 per year. The bottom 10 percent of AMR technicians make $10.02 or less per hour, or $20,850 per year. The top 10 percent earn $27.55 or more per hour, or $57,300 per year.

• The BLS estimates a 20 percent loss in AMR jobs through 2018 due to the use of remote meter reading systems.
