Dig up any old weeds or plants from the soil with a trowel. Preen helps prevent new weeds from growing, but it does not kill existing ones.

    • 2). Use a steel rake to prep the soil. Break up the surface area of the garden and clear off any dirt, stones or other debris that you may find. Use the rake to smooth and level out the soil.

    • 3). Put on gloves, a mask and protective glasses and spread Preen across the garden. Apply approximately 5 lbs. for every 250 square feet of soil. If you think it is necessary, you can apply more without adverse effect.

    • 4). Sprinkle the top 2 inches of soil with water.

    • 5). Wait for at least a day after application before planting seeds or seedlings.

    • 6). Reapply Preen every one to one and a half months after you have completed the first application. When doing so, ensure that the granules do not fall on the leaves or roots of wanted plants and that they are not wet.
