How to Make Hollow Shells
- 1). Blow up a long, narrow balloon, and tie the end. Set the balloon aside.
- 2). Pour 3 cups of flour and 2 cups of water into a pot.
- 3). Boil the mixture, then reduce heat and simmer for five minutes.
- 4). Allow the mixture to cool down completely.
- 5). Crumple up newspaper into a long rope.
- 6). Tape the newspaper rope onto the narrow balloon in a spiral-like fashion. Start at one end of the balloon, and wrap the newspaper rope around and around the balloon until you reach the other end, taping as you go.
- 7). Cut strips of newspaper into 6-inch pieces.
- 8). Dip the strips into the flour mixture, then drape them over the entire balloon structure. Add the paper mache strips in a spiral-like manner, circling the balloon in the same direction as the newspaper. Cover it with six layers.
- 9). Allow the paper mache structure to dry completely. This can take up to three hours.
- 10
Pop the balloon inside the paper mache shell with a pin. - 11
Paint the outside of the shell using white, violet, tan and brown acrylic paint. This will make the shell look more realistic. - 12
Allow the paint to dry completely before displaying the shell.
