New Jersey Small Business Certification
- Corporations, partnerships and limited liability companies (LLCs) must file formal documents with the division of revenue to become certified entities. Business owners must submit "Articles of Incorporation" to form a corporation, "Certificate of Formation" to form an LLC or "Certificate of Partnership" to form a partnership. Each filing incurs a fee ranging from $75 to $125, as of 2010.
- Many types of business require a professional or service license before opening their doors to the public. State-regulated professional services include accounting, legal, medical and architecture services. New Jersey has over 40 boards that oversee the development and licensing of professional services in the state. Some other businesses require licensing even though they do not provide a professional service. These companies include child care and taxi service businesses.
- Unlike licenses, permits do not reflect on the professionalism or training of a company or individual. Permits are often associated with fees that compensate the state government for damages a company may or will cause to the local environment. A corporation can obtain permits through New Jersey's Department of Environmental Protection.
