How to Graph Half of an Eclipse
- 1). Place the sharp point of your compass on a Cartesian plane with x and y axes and draw a circle.
- 2). Expand the compass and place the sharp point slightly outside of your circle, then draw another circle that carves out the majority of the first circle to form the shape of an eclipse.
- 3). Erase the portion of the first circle that you carved out to obtain your eclipse.
- 4). Place the sharp point of your compass on the center point of your second circle and the pencil on the near side of your eclipse. Use a ruler to measure the distance between the center point and the near side of your eclipse, then place the sharp point of your compass on the center point of your second circle and the pencil of your compass on the far side of your eclipse. Measure this distance, then average the two distances.
- 5). Expand the compass so that it equals the average. Place the sharp point of your compass on the center point of the second circle and draw another circle which will carve out half of the area of your eclipse. Erase the portion of your eclipse carved out.
