Fill in the half circle with the pastel markers. In the Japanese culture, light, bright colors symbolize spring and summer, and darker, richer colors are used to depict winter and autumn. - 3). Draw a light pencil line 2 inches from the bottom of the plate. Intersect that line vertically 4 inches from the left or the right, and then draw another light pencil line at a 90-degree angle. This will create the focal point of your design. Asymmetry is considered pleasing in Asian cultures and aesthetically gives the design fluidity and movement.
- 4). Sketch the design in charcoal on the fan, with the largest area of subject matter at the cross-section of the two lines. Build the design outward in diminishing size to draw the eye across the fan. The apple blossom image, for example, would be set up with the focal point to the right of center, the open blossom would be located at the dissection point of the grid and the buds would diminish in size off to the left. Fill the sketch in with colored pastels.
