How to Draw Vines
- 1). Draw a long, curving line. You may orient this line vertically, horizontally or diagonally depending on your composition.
- 2). Draw a small, circular curl at one end of the line.
- 3). Draw an identical line a short distance away from the first one to create a narrow tube.
- 4). Connect the two lines at the tip of the end curls with a short, diagonal line. This completes the outline of the vine.
- 5). Starting at the curling tip of the vine, add several, small semicircles extending from the vine. Distribute these shapes throughout the length of the vine on the right and left sides.
- 6). Add spiral-shaped curls to the right and left sides of the vine. Use as many of these curling features as you wish to embellish your vine.
- 7). Draw a second spiral directly beside each existing one. Draw these spirals so that the interior curls of the first set are concentric with those of the second set.
- 8). Connect the tips of each set of spirals with a short, diagonal line. These form small vines curling away from the main stalk.
- 9). Add leaves to your vine. The leaves on vines vary widely, so start with a photograph of a vine you wish to imitate. The leaves of grape vines display segmented parts with strong, angular tips. Other vines exhibit teardrop-shaped leaves with soft, rounded edges. Distribute the leaves of your vine evenly across its length, attaching them with narrow, curving stems.

Shade inside the vine with your pencil tip to darken it. Add shadow to each spiral.
