How to Tell If an SSN is Valid
- 1). Verify that the SSN does not have an area number higher than 772, as no genuine SSNs are higher than that.
- 2). Verify that the SSN does not have all zeroes in either the area, group or serial numbers, or an area number of 666.
- 3). Use a paid service for absolute assurance that the SSN is legitimate, such as People Records or Social Security Number Search. Enter the SSN and last name of the person you want information on, and you will have the option to pay a fee to verify that the SSN is valid and get background information on the person.
