DIY Sewing Table

    Choose the Sewing Table Dimensions

    • This is one of the most important steps, and the dimensions mentioned are solely for the size of the tabletop itself. Take into account the size of the room as well as whether you wish to assemble the sewing table yourself. If neither are a concern, then the sky is the limit. If it is, then decide how big you would like your table top to be and write that information down.

Get the Materials for your Sewing Table

    • Go to your local building supply store and look at the plywood sheets that are available. The standard plywood sheet is 4-by-8 foot. If this is suitable, then buy the cheapest one you can. It does not have to be pretty because you will be covering the surface. If you can find something smaller that matches your dimensions, then purchase that. You might also find that two pieces will fit together to form the dimensions you need. Next, go to a store that sells home goods and buy two ironing boards the same size. Price is not important--the fact that they are the same is.

    Prepare the Table Top

    • If you need to cut down your plywood to the size you need, set up two saw horses and lay your plywood upon it. Use a ruler and a pencil to mark the dimensions, then use a circular saw to cut it to size. Wear eye protection.

    Set up Your Sewing Table

    • Set up your ironing boards so that one is against the wall and the other is spaced a little away from it. Make sure there is some space between them. Lay your plywood on top of the ironing boards and adjust them as needed to support the plywood evenly. Cover the surface of the plywood with a sheet or brown paper. Your new surface is ready to use.
