Base molding is used to connect and separate the wall and floor at the same time, while serving as a complement to the architectural design of the house. Base molding comes in many styles and sizes these days and is used as an accent as well as adding a finishing touch to tie a room together. - Simple base molding coupled with contemporary chair rail.double base image by hazel proudlove from Fotolia.com
Beveled base molding has one bevel at the top of the moulding and is clean and simple. To add a little more interest, more bevels can be added at different heights and thicknesses and the bottom of the baseboard can extend upwards more. This modern wide baseboard works well in any room. - Embossed base molding adds a little more panache and depth to any room. Embosses can range from a simple design to a multi-leveled intricate carving. These types of mouldings are mostly found in older, ornate homes.
- While most baseboard is sold in oak, a new medium density fibreboard (MDF) is available. MDF is made from wood fibers that are glued and heat pressured to form planks that can be used for many projects, including trim and baseboard or molding. A re-purposed environment friendly alternative, MDF has no grain and is easily painted.
