    Useful Stuffed Scarecrow Crafts

    • Create a full-sized scarecrow to use in a field. Make a cross structure as a base. Dress the scarecrow in durable materials such as denim or flannel. Use long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Denim overalls and long-sleeved flannel shorts work best. Stuff the clothes with hay and tie the sleeves with twine to keep the hay from escaping. Stuff a burlap sack with hay and paint facial features with fabric paint to serve as the head. Add a hat by stuffing it and sewing it to the scarecrow's head. Stick the scarecrow in the ground to scare away hungry birds. Create a scarecrow for each member of the family. Don't forget babies and pets.

    Decorative Stuffed Scarecrow Crafts

    • Small decorative scarecrows can be created in a similar fashion as the full-sized versions. Create a cross structure. Be sure to make an "X" base and attach the cross to it so the scarecrow will stand on a table top or on the floor. Use baby or doll clothes for the scarecrow. You can also make your own clothes out of fabric scraps. Stuff the scarecrow with a combination of raffia and cotton batting. Make a head for the scarecrow by creating a sack out of burlap. You can use a brown paper grocery bag if the decoration is going to be used strictly indoors. Paint on facial features with fabric or tempera paint. Sewing felt pieces to a fabric head works well, as does gluing construction paper features onto a paper head. Instead of a standing scarecrow, consider making a sitting scarecrow who can perch in a favorite rocking chair during the fall season. Create the scarecrow in the same way except do not start with an "X" structure to build on.

    Stuffed Scarecrow Costume Crafts

    • Scarecrows make good Halloween costumes. Create a scarecrow costume out of old clothes and a few simple craft items. Use a long-sleeved flannel shirt and a pair of over-sized denim overalls as the base for the costume. The wearer should wear a t-shirt under the flannel shirt to prevent getting poked by hay. Stuff the front of the shirt with cotton batting. Sew it in place to prevent shifting. Stick a few pieces of raffia into the arm holes at the cuff and coming out of the buttons. Sew the raffia in place. Add face paint and an old cowboy hat. Tuck raffia under the hat to make it also look stuffed. Use work boots for footwear and tuck some raffia into the top.

    Other Stuffed Scarecrow Crafts

    • Help kids make their own stuffed scarecrows. Make two identical shaped body shapes out of tan colored felt. Use a gingerbread cookie cutter to get a good shape and size for a scarecrow craft. Stuff the scarecrow with cotton batting and glue the edges together with a hot glue gun (an adult's job). Add facial features with markers or older kids can stitch beads on for eyes and other facial features. Make clothes out of felt or fabric scraps. Use glue to attach the clothes. Glue brown or tan yarn pieces to the scarecrow's head to serve as hair. This craft can also be done with paper instead of felt. Attach a loop of yarn at the top to hang the scarecrow on the wall.
