How to Create a High Gloss Paint Finish
- 1). Wash interior vinyl, plastic, metal and fiberglass with soap, or the bonding primer won't stick. Thoroughly rinse dust, bird droppings and unseen oils from exterior surfaces, using a pressure washer. Let all surfaces dry for two hours before proceeding.
- 2). Roughen slick vinyl, plastic and fiberglass surfaces, or they will reject their painted finish. Sand each one of these surfaces until every part of them feels slightly coarse.
- 3). Apply the correct primer to the surface you plan to paint, using a polyester brush. Add latex primer to non-metallic items and bare wood. Don't use anything but a metal-etching primer on hard metallic items. If you plan to paint stained wood, apply a shellac-based primer, using a natural-bristled brush. Let every type of primer dry for two hours.
- 4). Wash your brush, using the correct medium. Water is appropriate for cleaning polyester brushes. Denatured alcohol is suited for cleaning natural brushes used to apply shellac primer.
- 5). Paint the conditioned surface as you primed it. Use either a glossy latex paint or high-gloss enamel. If you choose an enamel, be sure it has an acrylic base, or it won't bond to the primer.
