How to Make a Punk Costume
- 1). Cut or rip an asymmetrical line across a tight-fitting T-shirt and insert safety pins to reconnect the shirt. The original punks from the London scene wore loud, vibrant colors and patterns in order to stand out from mainstream fashion, and they often mixed clashing colors in their outfits.
- 2). Wear a fishnet shirt, or cut the sleeves off of the shirt and only wear the sleeves. Over time, fishnet shirts stretch and the holes enlarge, but you can speed up the process by ripping holes in it and washing it.
- 3). Wear a vest over the T-shirt, and safety pin buttons on the vest near the shoulder blade area. Explore your creativity by creating a pattern with the buttons, as punk is about self-expression rather than following what others do.
- 4). Make your top the focal point by wearing tight-fitting black jeans, and wear a hemp belt or rope instead of a leather belt. Crust punk fashion, which pushes the envelope of traditional punk fashion, makes a political statement through the fabric of clothing worn. Crust punks are often opposed to animal cruelty and avoid wearing clothes and accessories made of leather.
- 5). Complete your look with scuffed, worn boots. Alternately, old Converse high-top shoes are also suitable footwear commonly worn by street punks. Avoid buying new shoes for your outfit, as punk culture values used goods over new items. Vintage thrift stores and consignment shops are the best places for finding used shoes at a cheap price.
