Definition: the members of a jazz ensemble that provide the beat, pulse, groove, and harmonic material for a tune. The rhythm section usually consists of a bassist, pianist, and a drummer, but it may also include a guitarist, a percussionist, or any number or combination of the aforementioned. Members of the rhythm section may also be given the opportunity to solo.
