Spring is heralded by the first snowdrops and crocus popping up through the soil -- and sometimes even a late snow. As spring progresses and the weather warms up, more choices of flowers for the landscape crop up. Blue flowers call attention to themselves, as blue isn't a common color for flowers. Some blue spring flowers such as tulips are large, up to 4 inches in length. Others are tiny but prolific, such as forget-me-nots. - Forget-me-nots are perennials coming back spring after spring. The flowers are a clear medium blue with yellow centers. The five-petaled flowers are on the end of a short stem, which is clustered with other stems to form a group of flowers. Plant from seed the first year. Protect them with mulch in very cold winter areas. Forget-me-nots prefer shade but will grow in morning sun with afternoon shade.
- This annual plant only grows to 6 inches in height but is covered with dark blue flowers that resemble tiny snapdragons. Lobelia will spread to 12 inches. Use them in containers to grow over the edges. Besides dark blue, lobelia blooms in light blue and purple. Start from seed. They reseed themselves and may reappear the next spring as volunteers.
- These flowers resemble small lily of the valley blossoms, but grow clustered on an upright stem instead of hanging down like lily of the valley does. The color is a deep blue. Grape hyacinth grows from a bulb that blooms in late spring and occasionally blooms again in the fall. It's called grape hyacinth because the flowers look like standard hyacinths.
- Pansies range in size from giant varieties up to 3 inches wide to tiny violas no more than the size of a dime. They bloom in mid spring on bushes up to 12 inches high. A border of pansies sets off a spring garden of squill, crocus and snowdrops. They bloom a bit later than those bulbs and will hide fading foliage. Pansy's blue colors range from light to dark.
- Periwinkle is a creeping ground cover growing to 6 inches high with dark green leaves. The flowers have five petals, are a medium to light blue, and are star shaped.
