How to Germinate Sugar Snap Peas
- 1). Select a garden bed location that receives full sunlight. Spread a 2-inch layer of compost and an all-purpose fertilizer such as 16-16-8 over the garden bed. Work the compost into the top 6 inches of the soil with a garden hoe. Always read the directions on the fertilizer to ensure that you add it to the garden properly.
- 2). Sow the sugar snap pea seeds 1 inch deep into the soil. Space the seeds 2 inches apart and space the rows 2 feet apart. Place a trellis or other support system behind the seeds.
- 3). Water the seeds with 1 inch of water weekly to keep the soil moist. Allow the soil to dry slightly between each watering to prevent over-watering the soil.
- 4). Apply a row cover over the early seedlings to protect them frosts. Remove the row covers when frosts are not likely to occur.
- 5). Apply organic mulch around the peas to help control weeds and retain the water moisture.
