How to Root a Weeping Willow Tree

• 1). Using pruners, cut a small branch, approximately 1/2 to 1 inch in diameter and 16 to 18 inches long, from a mature weeping willow tree.
  
  
• 2). Trim away any stems and leaves on the branch 6 to 8 inches from the cut end of the branch.
  
  
• 3). Put the branch in a 5-gallon bucket, fill three-fourths full with water and store in an area that receives light and is free of freezing temperatures.
  
  
• 4). Monitor the branch daily until roots appear, adding water if necessary. It may take as long as four weeks for roots to appear.
  
  
• 5). Using a hoe or shovel, loosen the soil where you intend to plant the tree.
  
  
• 6). Put on gardening gloves. Pour approximately one-half gallon organic compost onto the soil and work it in with your hands.
  
  
• 7). Using a shovel or mattock, dig a hole at least 10 inches deep.
  
  
• 8). Place the willow tree branch in the hole, all the way to the bottom. Cover with soil and pack down lightly.
  
  
• 9). Cover the perimeter around the willow tree branch with organic compost, mulch or bark. This will help deter weeds and maintain moisture.
