    Uses

    • The Dana 44 axle was manufactured in several different designs. Dana 44's were used as rear axles in a variety of vehicles. Some Dana 44's were designed for use as a front axle in four-wheel drive vehicles. The Dana 44 is a popular front axle upgrade for modern four-wheel drive vehicles that were manufactured with weaker axles.

    Dana 44 RS

    • The Dana 44 RS went into production in 1965. The Dana 44 was the first reverse spiral axle. The center line of the pinion contacts the ring gear above the center line of the axle in the Dana 44RS. This design is good for four-wheel drive vehicles because it places the drive shaft at a higher level.

    Dana 44 Specs

    • The first Dana 44's had either a 10- or 19-spline axle shaft. The Dana 44's produced after 1972 had 30-spline axle shafts. The Dana 44 had an 8.5-inch diameter ring gear and was offered with gear ratios ranging from 2.72:1 to 5.89.1.
