How to Replace a Fuel Filter on a 1996 Ford Ranger
- 1). Relieve pressure on the fuel system by removing the fuse to the fuel pump located under the hood closest to the windshield on the driver's side. Run the engine until it cuts off on its own. You may want to crank the engine two to three more times to guarantee no fuel pressure remains. Many mechanics recommend removing the gas cap, during this step, to help relieve pressure as well. Replace the gas cap before continuing.
- 2). Use a jack to raise the front driver's side of the truck. Position a jack stand under the frame rail close to the jack.
- 3). Locate the fuel filter on the inside of the driver's side frame rail. Place a drain pan under the fuel filter to catch any gas overflow.
- 4). Use a small, flat head screwdriver to remove the white plastic clips on each side of the filter. Undo the fuel lines and remove the fuel filter.
- 5). Install the new filter with new white plastic clips. Lower the truck to the ground with the jack.
- 6). Replace the fuse, start the engine and check for leaks.
