How to Upgrade My Tires
- 1). Check the current tire size. A number can be found on the sidewall and a guide to the number is offered at www.ehow.co.uk/how_7428389_size-wheel-hub.html.
- 2). Decide whether you want to upgrade to a tire of the same size or larger. Increasing the size of the tires on your car will improve handling but will involve the purchase of a new set of wheels.
- 3). Establish what kind of tires you will need. Are the roads in your area icy in the winter or will you be doing a lot of highway or interstate driving? For both of these scenarios, special tires are available.
- 4). Purchase the tires and, if necessary, a new set of wheels.
- 1). Remove the old wheels by jacking up the car, unscrewing the wheel nuts and pulling the tire off the hub.
- 2). Deflate the tires by pushing in the core of the valve stem.
- 3). Apply dish detergent as a lubricant between the rim and tire.
- 4). Pry off the tire from the rim with a large screwdriver or pry bar.
- 5). Repeat all the way round and on all four tires.
- 1). Lay the wheel flat on the ground with the front side pointing up.
- 2). Lubricate the inside edge of the tire with dish detergent.
- 3). Work you way round the entire wheel until the whole of one side of the tire is now on the rim.
- 4). Repeat this process on the other tire edge and on the remaining tires.
- 5). Inflate the tires to the manufacturer's recommended pressure.
- 6). Place the wheel on the hub and tighten the wheel nuts.
- 7). Remove the jack.
