How to Put an Eye at the End of a Rope
- 1). Measure 14 twists from one end of the rope. Put a piece of tape around the rope at this point.
Untwist the 14 twists from the end up to the tape. Tape the end of each separate strand. Mark the three strands as L (left), M (middle) and R (right). - 2). Bend the rope to form the eye (or loop) of the desired size. Mark the beginning of the eye with tape. Bend the rope from left to right.
- 3). Tuck the middle strand under a strand of the rope just beyond the tape, which marks the beginning of the eye. Use the marlin spike to open the twists in the rope to make room for the strand. Mark the strand you tucked under as a reference point.
- 4). Take the left strand over the strand which you just tucked under and tuck it under the strand just to the left of the marked strand.
- 5). Tuck the right strand under the strand to the right of the strand marked after you tucked the middle strand. Pull the left, middle and right strands snug.
- 6). Tuck all three strands four times, making sure each working strand goes over a strand and is then tucked under a strand. After each tuck pull all three strands snug.
- 7). Cut the ends, leaving a piece approximately as long as the diameter of the rope. The ends will be drawn into the rope when strain is put on the eye.
