How to Care for a Chinese Flame Tree
- 1). Water the soil under the Chinese flame tree as often as needed to keep it moist but not soggy. During winter, water only once per week, but in summer increase to two or three times per week depending on your region.
- 2). Apply an all-purpose, slow-release fertilizer to the soil under the tree in the spring. Use the amounts of fertilizer specified on the container and water well after application. Do not apply fertilizer after the first year of growth.
- 3). Look under the tree in the spring and summer for small seedlings that have sprouted from the tree's seed. Pull these up with your hands and discard.
- 4). Prune during winter when the Chinese flame tree is dormant. Prune off any dead branches as close to the trunk as you can using a pruning saw. Then look for any limbs that are growing outside of the natural canopy and prune them back using loppers or the saw until they blend in.
- 5). Prune the limbs off any trees that are growing over the Chinese flame to allow as much sunlight through as possible. Chinese flame trees will begin to deteriorate if they become shaded.
